What do The Eagles, outgoing San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and the Wienerschnitzel fast-food outlet in Hillcrest have in common?
Take a bow, veteran San Diego singer-songwriter Jack Tempchin! Make that, a "peaceful easy feeling" kind of bow.
On Dec. 1, 1972, The Eagles released their version of "Peaceful Easy Feeling," which went on to become one of the band's most popular and beloved hits. It was written by Tempchin, who completed the final verse of his classic ballad while waiting for his order at the Wienerschnitzel (then known as Der Wienerschnitzel) on Washington Street in Hillcrest...

TEMPCHIN'S 'PEACEFUL EASY FEELING' AT 40 -SD Union Tribune
“Jack is a guy who doesn’t get enough credit. What a great songwriter he is!” said Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, who lived near Tempchin in Encinitas between 1995 and 2001.
Frey first heard Tempchin play "Peaceful Easy Feeling" when he and Tempchin were at Jackson Browne's home in Hollywood.
"The Eagles had been together for barely a week at the time, but Frey immediately recognized a great song when he heard it. A gentle song with a lilting melody and carefully honed lyrics of aspirational love, "Peaceful Easy Feeling" sounds both personal and universal. Stylistically, it can be played as a folk song or a country ballad. Then and now, its verses and chorus have an inviting sing-along quality that's hard to resist..." -George Varga SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE

REVIEW EXCERPT: "Jack Tempchin’s life after 1973 would be a whirlwind of rock star fantasies. He would write some of the finest and best-selling pop songs of the last 50 years. He would tour with the likes of Ringo Starr. He would spend the next 35-plus years in the spotlight as a performer and bandleader.
Much of that changed, however, a few years ago when Tempchin decided to go back to his folk roots. Instead of performing with a backing band, Jack began gigging solo, alone on stage with just his voice, an acoustic guitar, and his harmonica. It’s just Jack, alone, and stripped down to his bare essence... The end result is a masterful tour de force by a master songwriter and country-rock journeyman." ~Raul Sandelin, SAN DIEGO TROUBADOUR
